On September 25, a conference titled “Protecting Agricultural Workers and Rural Citizens from Pesticides” was held at the European Parliament. The event was organized by the Pesticide Action Network Europe (PAN Europe) in collaboration with Members of the European Parliament Christophe Clergeau and Marie Toussaint. It brought together experts, scientists, and representatives of non-governmental organizations, including Ina Agafonova, Chair of the Board of the Via Pontica Foundation.
The conference addressed serious concerns related to the use of pesticides and their impact on human health and the environment. A key focus was placed on vulnerable groups, such as children and agricultural workers, who are at increased risk of chronic diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease.
One of the highlights of the discussion was the scientific evidence on the harms of chronic pesticide exposure. A report presented by Dr. Paul Scheepers from Wageningen University showed that conventional farmers are exposed to significant levels of pesticides, whereas organic farmers display lower levels of pesticide residues in their bodies.
The event emphasized the importance of increasing public involvement in protecting health and the environment, as well as the need to strengthen legislation and ensure its proper enforcement.
The conference concluded with a call for stricter legislation and better implementation of regulations to promote sustainable agricultural practices, in order to safeguard both people and the environment from the harmful effects of pesticides.
