The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands organized the online panel discussion on the Occasion of the World Wetlands Day 2021 on Monday 1 February 2021 from 15.00 to 16.30 CET.

Responding to the invitation of the Secretariat, Ms. Ina Agafonova, Founder and Chairperson of the Board of the Via Pontica Foundation took part in the event.

“Wetlands and Water” is the theme to mark Word Wetlands Day in 2021 to highlight the important role of wetlands for fresh water security and to achieving SDG 6 on ensuring availability of water.

The high level event was moderated by the Secretary General of the Convention, Ms. Martha Rojas Urrego, and featured diverse speakers including, the Heads of IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, experts from UN-WATER, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, Danone, as well as a representative from the government of Mexico and the Chair of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel.

The speakers provided insights on why we need to upscale and accelerate initiatives that conserve wetlands and all freshwater ecosystems to ensure freshwater for all.
