Huge pollution of the Black Sea with plastic waste
A world survey shows that the plastic packaging we throw in Bulgaria for one summer would cover the surface of all our sea beaches.
Plastic pollution of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is comparable to the world’s dirtiest seas.
The study was conducted by the board of the Rainbow Warrior in August last year. His authors are scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Greenpeace volunteers. The calculations show that in August 2017, in the investigated area between Bourgas and Cape Kaliakra, the microplastic masses averaged 429,000 particles per square kilometer.
“Every day only in the Black Sea, and only on the Bulgarian shores, 3 tonnes of plastic waste are found, which is really scary,” commented Kremena Vateva, volunteer Greenpeace.
