World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on February 2 to raise awareness of the importance of wetlands for humanity and the planet. Each year for February 2, a theme is chosen that emphasizes a certain vital function of wetlands. The theme for 2021 is “Wetlands and water”.
“Wetlands and water”, the theme for WWD 2021, shines a spotlight on wetlands as a source of freshwater and encourages actions to restore them and stop their loss.
We are facing a growing freshwater crisis that threatens people and our planet. We use more freshwater than nature can replenish, and we are destroying the ecosystem that water and all life depend on most – Wetlands.
The 2021 campaign highlights the contribution of wetlands to the quantity and quality of freshwater on our planet. Water and wetlands are connected in an inseparable co-existence that is vital to life, our wellbeing and the health of our planet.
Scientists estimate that at least 64% of the planet’s wetlands have disappeared since 1900.
So what are the solutions to water scarcity?
We could have enough water for nature and us if we:
- Stop destroying, start restoring wetlands.
- Don’t dam rivers or over extract from aquifers.
- Address pollution, cleanup freshwater sources.
- Increase water efficiency, use wetlands wisely.
- Integrate water and wetlands into development plans and resource management.

On the occasion of World Wetlands Day 2021, the Via Pontica Foundation will present two initiatives:
Event 1
Via Pontica Foundation will present a series of information videos in order to improve the positive and proactive attitude towards wetlands. The videos will be broadcast through social media.

Event 2
Via Pontica Foundation will implement a joint project in partnership with Zlatna Ribka Kindergarten, Burgas. Within the project an educational presentation will be presented to engage the attention of children and their teachers to the topic of wetlands. There is also the opportunity for children to participate in a virtual art exhibition, entitled “Water is life!”, which will be reflected in social networks.
