Bulgaria takes a new step towards stronger protection of marine biodiversity
The Via Pontica Foundation welcomes the recent decision of the Bulgarian government to approve the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction, also known as the High Seas Treaty.
This is an important step for the future of marine conservation. At a time when marine ecosystems are under mounting pressure from pollution, biodiversity loss and climate change, stronger international commitments are essential for protecting marine life and managing the environment more sustainably.
The Agreement creates a framework for better cooperation in conserving and sustainably using marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. Although these waters lie outside the borders of individual states, their ecological importance is global, and their condition affects coastal regions, marine species and the overall health of the planet.
For the Via Pontica Foundation this development is closely connected to our mission of protecting biodiversity and promoting sustainable solutions for coastal and marine environments. It also reflects the values underpinning our work in the Black Sea region, where we support knowledge exchange, environmental responsibility and practical action for ecosystem resilience.
We believe that real progress in protecting the marine environment depends on cooperation between institutions, scientists, civil society organisations and local communities. Decisions such as this one show that marine biodiversity is increasingly recognised as a shared responsibility and a priority for the future.
The Via Pontica Foundation will continue to support efforts that contribute to healthier ecosystems, better-informed public debate and stronger partnership in defence of nature.
